Kandy

The cultural heart of the island, wrapped around a lake.

The place

Kandy is where Sri Lanka keeps its soul. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic sits at its centre, drummers echo across the lake at dusk, and the hills fold in on every side.

It's also the gateway to the hill country, most journeys pause here before the famous train ride south.

Best months to visit

Sri Lanka runs on two monsoons, so somewhere on the island is always in season.

The southwest (Yala) monsoon brings rain to the west and south roughly May to September, while the northeast (Maha) monsoon turns to the east and north around October to January. When you tell us your dates, we’ll time Kandyto the window it’s at its best — and route the rest of your journey to the coast that’s in the dry.

Insider highlight

Go before the crowd

Kandy’s finest hour is the one before everyone else arrives. We’ll build your day around it with a local guide who knows exactly when to be where — so you get the quiet, unhurried version most visitors miss.
