Mirissa

Whales at dawn, palm trees at sunset.

The place

Mirissa is the south coast's sweet spot, a crescent of golden sand with just enough going on. Blue whales cruise offshore between November and April, and Coconut Tree Hill has become the island's most photographed sunset.

Evenings are barefoot ones: fresh seafood on the sand, lanterns in the palms.

Best months to visit

Sri Lanka runs on two monsoons, so somewhere on the island is always in season.

The southwest (Yala) monsoon brings rain to the west and south roughly May to September, while the northeast (Maha) monsoon turns to the east and north around October to January. When you tell us your dates, we’ll time Mirissato the window it’s at its best — and route the rest of your journey to the coast that’s in the dry.

Insider highlight

Go before the crowd

Mirissa’s finest hour is the one before everyone else arrives. We’ll build your day around it with a local guide who knows exactly when to be where — so you get the quiet, unhurried version most visitors miss.
