The island where blue whales, the largest animals ever to have lived, surface just a few miles offshore.

Eight days moving through Sri Lanka's great national parks and wildlife habitats, from the elephant plains of the north to the leopard country of the south, with the Sinharaja rainforest and the Indian Ocean in between.

What you’ll remember
- Track wild leopards at dawn in Yala National Park, the world's highest density of leopards per square kilometre, in a landscape of scrub jungle, lagoons, and ocean frontage
- Watch two hundred or more wild Asian elephants gather at the Minneriya reservoir in one of nature's great spectacles, the Gathering, which takes place between July and October
- Board a small vessel off Mirissa in the pre-dawn dark and wait for the spout, blue whales, the largest animals ever to have lived, surfacing in the waters of the Indian Ocean
- Walk into the Sinharaja rainforest with a naturalist guide, the only remaining primary rainforest in Sri Lanka, home to over fifty percent of the country's endemic species
- Spot sloth bears, crocodiles, sambar deer, and painted storks in Udawalawe, one of the best parks in Asia for elephant viewing at close range
- Wake before dawn on safari days and understand, in the silence before the jeep starts, why the early start is always worth it
- End the journey on the south coast, because after days in the wild, the Indian Ocean feels exactly right

The route, step by step
- Day 01
Day 1. Arrival & the Road North
Land in Colombo and drive north into the dry zone, arriving in elephant country by evening at a lodge on the edge of the plains.
- Day 02
Day 2. Minneriya, the Gathering
Private jeep game drive in Minneriya National Park, where several hundred wild Asian elephants converge on the ancient reservoir between July and October, plus leopards, sloth bears, and dense birdlife.
- Day 03
Day 3. Sigiriya & the Road South
Morning climb of the Sigiriya rock fortress, then the afternoon drive south toward the hill country and the southern parks.

Day 4. Sinharaja Rainforest
A naturalist-guided morning walk in Sinharaja, Sri Lanka's only primary rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to over half the island's endemic species.
- Day 05
Day 5. Udawalawe, Elephant Country
Morning game drive in Udawalawe, over six hundred resident elephants, water buffalo, sambar deer, crocodiles, 200+ bird species, with an optional afternoon visit to the Elephant Transit Home for orphaned calves.

Day 6. Yala, Leopard Country
Pre-dawn safari in Yala National Park, the world's highest leopard density, plus elephants, sloth bears, and mugger crocodiles; optional afternoon game drive.
- Day 07
Day 7. Mirissa, Blue Whales
Early boat from Mirissa harbour for blue whales (Nov–Apr) and near-certain spinner dolphins, back by mid-morning with a free south coast afternoon.
- Day 08
Day 8. The South Coast & Departure
A final south coast morning, an optional stop at Galle Fort, then the drive back to Colombo airport.
