Sigiriya

A 5th-century palace on top of a 200-metre rock.

The place

Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's single most extraordinary sight, an ancient royal citadel built on the summit of a granite monolith, ringed by water gardens and frescoes that have survived fifteen centuries.

Climb at sunrise, before the heat and the crowds, and the Cultural Triangle spreads out beneath you like a map.

Best months to visit

Sri Lanka runs on two monsoons, so somewhere on the island is always in season.

The southwest (Yala) monsoon brings rain to the west and south roughly May to September, while the northeast (Maha) monsoon turns to the east and north around October to January. When you tell us your dates, we’ll time Sigiriyato the window it’s at its best — and route the rest of your journey to the coast that’s in the dry.

Insider highlight

Go before the crowd

Sigiriya’s finest hour is the one before everyone else arrives. We’ll build your day around it with a local guide who knows exactly when to be where — so you get the quiet, unhurried version most visitors miss.
