Anuradhapura

The island's first great capital, still sacred after two thousand years.

The place

The oldest of Sri Lanka's ancient cities, a vast sprawl of white dagobas, monastery ruins and sacred pools that was a working capital for well over a thousand years.

At its heart is the Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the tree the Buddha sat beneath, and still tended by monks today.

Best months to visit

Sri Lanka runs on two monsoons, so somewhere on the island is always in season.

The southwest (Yala) monsoon brings rain to the west and south roughly May to September, while the northeast (Maha) monsoon turns to the east and north around October to January. When you tell us your dates, we’ll time Anuradhapurato the window it’s at its best — and route the rest of your journey to the coast that’s in the dry.
