Trincomalee

Deep-water bays and powder beaches on the road less travelled.

The place

Trincomalee has one of the world's great natural harbours, a clifftop temple, and, just north, the white-sand beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli, where the east coast shows off between April and September.

Whales offshore, reef snorkelling at Pigeon Island, and far fewer footprints than the south.

Best months to visit

Sri Lanka runs on two monsoons, so somewhere on the island is always in season.

The southwest (Yala) monsoon brings rain to the west and south roughly May to September, while the northeast (Maha) monsoon turns to the east and north around October to January. When you tell us your dates, we’ll time Trincomaleeto the window it’s at its best — and route the rest of your journey to the coast that’s in the dry.

Insider highlight

Go before the crowd

Trincomalee’s finest hour is the one before everyone else arrives. We’ll build your day around it with a local guide who knows exactly when to be where — so you get the quiet, unhurried version most visitors miss.
