Negombo

A working fishing town by the airport, and an easy first or last night.

The place

Ten minutes from the airport, Negombo trades the rush of Colombo for a long beach, a lagoon full of outrigger canoes, and one of the island's most colourful fish markets.

It makes a gentle bookend to a journey, land, breathe, and ease into island time before the road, or wind down beside the sea before the flight home.

Best months to visit

Sri Lanka runs on two monsoons, so somewhere on the island is always in season.

The southwest (Yala) monsoon brings rain to the west and south roughly May to September, while the northeast (Maha) monsoon turns to the east and north around October to January. When you tell us your dates, we’ll time Negomboto the window it’s at its best — and route the rest of your journey to the coast that’s in the dry.

Insider highlight

Go before the crowd

Negombo’s finest hour is the one before everyone else arrives. We’ll build your day around it with a local guide who knows exactly when to be where — so you get the quiet, unhurried version most visitors miss.

Who it’s for

Who this place suits

For travellers who'd rather start or end by the sea than in the city, minutes from the terminal.
