Hill Country & Tea

The island at its most beautiful, and slowest. Which is exactly the point.

The journey

A private way through Sri Lanka

There is a moment, somewhere on the road between Kandy and the hill country, when the air changes. The heat of the coast lifts. The vegetation thickens into something green and cool. The road begins to climb, and suddenly you're winding through tea plantations that roll to every horizon, the landscape that made Ceylon famous, and that still produces some of the finest tea in the world.

This journey is built around that feeling. It moves slowly through Kandy, up into the hills, along the most scenic railway in Asia, and down eventually to the calm of the south coast, where the Indian Ocean and the Dutch-colonial streets of Galle provide a graceful end to ten days of genuine beauty.

Nothing about this itinerary is rushed. The hill country rewards people who slow down for it. Your guide knows which tea factory is worth the visit, which viewpoint the guidebooks have overlooked, and when the best thing to do is simply stop the car and let you look.

This is Sri Lanka at its most romantic. And it is entirely, unhurriedly yours.

Highlights

What you’ll remember

  • Arrive in Kandy and feel the city settle around you, the lake, the temple, the hills holding everything in, before the road begins to climb the next morning
  • Visit a working tea factory where the leaves picked that morning are already being sorted, dried, and rolled, and drink the result while it's still warm from the source
  • Board the hill country train at a small station above the clouds and ride it through waterfalls, viaducts, and jungle to Ella, the most photographed railway journey in Asia, and worth every photograph
  • Stand at Ella Gap as the landscape drops 3,000 feet to the eastern plains below, one of those views that makes you instinctively reach for a camera and then put it down
  • Walk the ramparts of Galle Fort at dusk, where the Indian Ocean turns coral and the 400-year-old Dutch walls hold the light long after the sun has gone
  • Spend a genuinely unscheduled day on the south coast, the beach, the pool, a massage, a long lunch, with no itinerary and no particular plan
  • Take an unannounced detour with your guide to a small tea estate or a hill country waterfall that doesn't appear in any itinerary, the best finds on this journey are never planned
