Jaffna
The North

Jaffna

The proud, distinct capital of the north, a different Sri Lanka entirely.

The place

Long hard to reach and all the more rewarding for it, Jaffna has its own language, temples, food and rhythm, Tamil culture at full volume, warm and quietly resurgent.

Golden dosai, a vast Hindu temple in full colour, island-hopping causeways and a fort above the lagoon: the north feels like discovering a second country on the same island.

Best months to visit

Sri Lanka runs on two monsoons, so somewhere on the island is always in season.

The southwest (Yala) monsoon brings rain to the west and south roughly May to September, while the northeast (Maha) monsoon turns to the east and north around October to January. When you tell us your dates, we’ll time Jaffnato the window it’s at its best — and route the rest of your journey to the coast that’s in the dry.

Insider highlight

Go before the crowd

Jaffna’s finest hour is the one before everyone else arrives. We’ll build your day around it with a local guide who knows exactly when to be where — so you get the quiet, unhurried version most visitors miss.
