Beach & South Coast

History in the morning. The Indian Ocean in the afternoon. Nothing planned for the rest.

The journey

A private way through Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's south coast is one of those places that earns its reputation without trying. The beaches are long and quiet. The water is warm. The pace of life slows to something close to perfect, and the Dutch-colonial streets of Galle Fort, just a short drive away, give each morning just enough to look at before the afternoon belongs entirely to the ocean.

This journey is for the traveller who has earned the right to properly unwind. It begins with a few days of light culture. Kandy, the sacred tooth relic, the drive down through tea country, and then settles into the south coast for the remainder of the journey. Long lunches. Sea views. Massages when the mood takes you. The occasional excursion when curiosity wins over comfort.

Your guide is with you for the whole journey. The vehicle is yours. The schedule is whatever you decide it is that morning. And if you decide it is nothing at all, that is exactly what it should be.

Highlights

What you’ll remember

  • Walk the coral-stone ramparts of Galle Fort at dusk, a 400-year-old Dutch fortification above the Indian Ocean, now home to some of the island's finest galleries, cafés, and boutique hotels
  • Spend an afternoon doing nothing on a south coast beach, the water warm, the beach quiet, the only decision whether to order another drink before or after the swim
  • Take a traditional Sri Lankan cooking class in a local kitchen, the spices, the coconut milk, the techniques behind a cuisine that most visitors only experience in restaurants
  • Watch wild stilt fishermen balance above the surf at Weligama, a fishing method unique to this stretch of coastline, and one of the most photographed scenes in the country
  • Visit a turtle hatchery on the coast road, where rescued eggs are incubated and hatchlings returned to the sea, one of the quiet conservation stories of the south coast
  • Take a slow morning in Kandy before the drive south, the Temple of the Tooth Relic, the lake, a colonial-era botanical garden with a Javan fig tree so large it has its own postcode
  • Wake one morning to go whale watching off Mirissa, blue whales in season, spinner dolphins year-round, the boat back by mid-morning with the rest of the day still ahead
